Life of Glych #78 – Depression is…

Sometimes I deal with depression. This is a comic about me trying to power through it while acknowledging my bad habits. Drawing is better than not-drawing.

So, I have to admit, the lump is fun to draw. But that does not negate how things were left in the end. I hope I can do the reality of the situation justice with my cathartic cartooning. Here’s another Lump poem. *ahem*:

The Lying Lump

I know of a manipulative liar, lying on a moor.
He lies all days in moors because he has no place indoors.
The fire-panted liar, lazing about all day.
Lit his moor afire, lying to it one day.
He pondered over taxes and wondered over fees,
while all the while he was lighting the ground aflame with his knees.
Now he has no place to lie and lump around all day.
The manipulative little liar lied his world away.

This is the beginning of the end of a friendship, in comic form. Because when you’re hurt, make art. I wrote other poems that won’t make it into comic form, so here is one below. I shall include another with the next page.

The good thing about the end is that it got me to get to making comics again. I’m just sad how things ended, that things ended, and that I let someone take advantage of me for so long. So, to poetry! Enjoy:

Smells Like Lump

I knew a little lump.
Lumping through his day.
He lumped his way to the fridge,
and lumped his way to slay
video game monsters on the Internet all day.
But the little lazy lump,
with his lazy gaming days,
forgot to lump to work, and oops!
He lumped his Internet away
with no monsters left to slay.
So now he yells and cries,
and lumps himself a fit.
But this lazy little lump?
He’s just a piece of shit.
And I am done with it.

I really like the visual play with the comic format in this panel. When you’re not feeling well (depression) you do fish for compliments, but it’s not out of a need to be the center of attention. More of validation for the qualities about yourself that are positive rather than focus on the negative.

Long time no update! These comics have been hiding in a box in storage for half a year and were drawn well before that. As mentioned in the last post, we’re rearing up for a darker turn in the subject matter towards dealing with depression and other issues. It might be tough to see. When I made these comics I wasn’t ready to show them to anyone. Enough time has passed that they don’t hurt so much.

This is after about a weeks work or so, anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour, of adding clay. Because I kept turning him over in my hands the black smeared into the white a bit, but the shape is starting to come together.

This is a pretty good profile shot. The sword is only loosely placed in his hand. The weight is good enough that I can probably point it forward when I get to that point.

This is T from the back. I have not defined any muscle tissue yet, this is just roughing in the black.

From the back he is starting to look like a cat. His feet still seem huge to me though.

The goggles are only roughed in foil at this stage and might be subject to change. They are only placed on the head, not pinned or attached.

After adding some pins to hold in the last loose bits of foil and some final tweaking, it was time to add clay! Now, like an idiot, I started with the white. I should have started with the black and added white later. I was more concerned with the weight than I was the material, so the white will have to be addressed in the future.

His feet feel like they got huge at this stage, but I stuck to my model sheet. His tail is at a good angle. All dtail is only roughed in at this point.

A shot from the side and the tuxedo belly of Captain T.

Another shot from the back of the tail twist counter to the action line of his body.

T looking straight on. I had moved his arm so they lined up.

This was an actual conversation Ian and I had. I had been looking for steady work in the arts pretty much since graduating from college at that point with little luck. It is only now, after living in Colorado for seven months, that I am working in an industry I love at a place I really like. It’s a lot easier to be posting these comics in that position that the one I was in when I made them.

Ah, Skyrim, my sanctuary. I have played this game off and on since it was released back in 2011. I have a character I started about 3 or 4 weeks ago on my game console right now for Skyrim….

Don’t judge me. I’m having fun.
